If you’ve missed out on our discussion of sports ministry, catch up here and here. We’ve established that sports commitments can hinder a youth’s ability to be involved at church, and we suggested that we start using sports as a tool to reach them! Yesterday, we discussed three components to creating an effective sports ministry—keeping it relational, recurring, and real. Keep your focus on sports being the tool, and evangelism and discipleship being the goal.
Today, the last question we ask is, “What can we do?” How can we practically reach the proverbial ball field?
Unless you have time to create your own sports program, it can often be overwhelming trying to determine where to start. Base Sports ministry is passionate about equipping the local church to reach kids for Christ through sports! Base Sports oversees High Power, which provides sports opportunities for kids ages 4-12. We are a part of the Awana family of ministries, and as a strategic partner, love to provide ways to help churches reach more kids.
Here are some ideas of what you can do:
Parent to child –Find tools to help connect parents with their children. We can provide you with tools that use sports to teach Biblical concepts. Base Sports is currently working in partnership with Awana and Golf Pro Peter Longo to develop material called Scripture Golf. This will be a free resource for parents and kids to work together in scripture memory and character development, all while playing golf. For more information, click here.
Sports Camp – Have a week long sports camp at your church that helps build relationships with kids from the community. We can help you engage those kids, and after an amazing week of sharing Jesus and seeing lives changed, provide follow up to the families to make it recurring. Base Sports can help with materials and training. We are currently piloting Basketball, Cheer, and a fundamentals of sports for 4 and 5 year olds called Kickstart. To find out if you could be part of our pilot program contact us today.
Sports Club – A weekly ministry that focuses on skills development and can be used for both evangelism and discipleship. This sports ministry model can be run as a simple club or as a league within your church. Make your main focus Scripture. High Power is currently creating a 12 week sports club curriculum for you to use. Allowing churches to use these materials during the summer to reach out to a new group of children or use the materials year round.
Sports Missions – Sports is a worldwide hobby. There are children around the globe who LOVE to play sports. Engage your youth in using their athletic talents to share Jesus! Check out www.missiondifferently.org for more information.
We want to equip you to do effective ministry. We pray that sports will show itself as a tool to evangelize and disciple the kids in your community. Email me at email@example.com to chat ideas, talk about what God’s doing in your church, or to decide on where to start!
